TV series filmed in Pomerania

Dunno about you, but when we watch TV series that we know are shot somewhere we’ve been, we wait to see if we can identify the locations and we have been watching many series in the last few months, and we bet you have too! Apart from foreign productions made in locations that seem distant or even exotic to Polish watchers, we enjoy series showing familiar places we’ve actually been to. #Didyouknow that our very own Pomerania has been featured in many TV series and films? Where, here a list for you!

Get over to Baltic sea for just a smile

Summer’s on, it’s getting hot outside so the first thing that comes to mind is a seaside trip. Poldek and Duduś from Journey for One Smile have the same idea. They travel from Krakowand try, by hook or by crook, to get their moms to Hel. Along the way they face many adventures and meet fascinating people who help them reach their destination. How was life without the Internet, smartphones, when it all seemed much easier, people lived closer to each other and kindness and openness were a gateway to adventure? This series shot in Gdańsk, Sopot, Kartuzy, Hel and Garcz will teleport you straight to the 1970s.

Wartime espionage

Following the TV classics, we’ll come across the most popular Polish spy, Stanisław Kolicki aka the German officer – Hans Kloss. More Than Life at Stake is an 18-episode series created in 1967-68. It may have not been watched by everybody, but there’s barely anyone who hasn’t at least heard of it. It’s worth catching up with and at the same time spotting Grand Hotel in Sopot that plays the title hotel from the second episode, the neighbourhood of Gdańsk Główny as well as Gdańsk Oliwa railway station and . Długa Street, Długi Targ, Mariacka Street, Bulwar Nadmorski in Gdynia and Orłowo Cliff. On top of that, one of the villas in Sopot and the square by the Torture chamber pretend to be … a part of Istanbul in Turkey!

Oldschool crime stories

The next classic, extremely popular in the time of the Polish People’s Republic is lieutenant Borewicz conducting a number of investigations in 07 Come In, broadcasted in 1976–89. In the first episode, Berger’s villa in Sopot plays the gang leader’s headquarters. It seems that both Grand Hotel and Orłowo Cliff turned out to be very appealing locations for action and criminal plot because they were not only used in More Than Life at Stake but also in this production. In addition, Sopot and Gdynia Orłowo Piers and the gate of the Gdańsk Shipyard were shown as well.

Lights, Camera.. Gdynia

There’s no doubt that the shooting of many series in Pomerania, especially in Tricity is owed to the fact that there are ongoing campaigns to promote the cities. One of these shows is Lifeline telling the story of a few families living in Gdynia. The rising stars of the Polish cinema and television, the plot more ambitious than of an average drama series are great advantages of this prematurely canceled TV production. The characters live in Sea Towers apartment buildings, walk on Bulwar in Gdynia or Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street and the pier in Sopot.

The hidden intentions

One of the most recent series revolves around the complicated relations between the three characters and a murder case the police superintendent Szulc tries to solve. Current events intertwine with flashbacks from the past which lets us get to know everyone involved, their links to one another, and the motive from the title. The series shows the Old Town, Stadion Energa Gdańsk, Falowiec – the wavy block of flats in Przymorze, The Sopot Pier, and Górki Zachodnie among others. There’s only been one season so far but keep your fingers crossed for more!

Lawyer up

Family time

Tricity and Pomerania in general have been visited by characters featured in many different series over many seasons of their TV presence. The Boski family from “Rodzinka.pl” spent relaxing seaside holidays here. The crew of Crime Detectives filmed two episodes in. Babie Doły, Władysławowo, Puck, and Rozewie. Only recently Targ Rybny witnessed the revival of Usta Usta and the shooting of the first episode of its new season. Gdańsk was chosen because it resembles … Boston, Massachusetts in the US. While the protagonists of the classic series Four Tank-Men and a Dog were driving their tank in Gdynia, Krynica Morska and Piaski.

It’s not surprising that Pomeranian locations which appear to be most attractive to series producers are mainly situated in Tricity. The picturesque and modern metropolis close to the sea makes the perfect background for action, a mysterious crime, an exciting adventure as well as everyday life with its ups and downs.
